Orthorectified black & white aerial photography of Bermuda, captured in 1941, prior to the United States military engineers creating land to build the base/airport .
After this picture was taken, the US Army levelled Long Bird Island and smaller islands at the north of Castle Harbour,
infilling waterways and part of the harbour to make a land-mass contiguous with St. David's Island & Cooper's Island.
This added 750 acres (3 km2) to Bermuda's land mass, bringing the total area of the base to 1,165 acres (4.7 km2).
For comparison, Bermuda's total size is only 13,150 acres, so Bermuda's land mass grew by almost 6% when the military base/airport was built.
